Kokonao, administrative center of Mimika subdivision, is located on a sandbar stretching along the
beach. It is surrounded by tidal forests and muddy rivers. Similar conditions exist for most villages so
that it can be said that all Mimika people live in close companionship with the water. It depends upon the
tides of the sea whether or not shallow rivers are navigable, a coaster can enter, a hydroplane can land.
The sandbar is not more than one and one-half miles in length and very narrow at places; the Papuans live
there in a kind of "collective village", with houses built along a narrow straight road bordered wit
cocopalms.
Because of the European settlement and its boarding schools the island gives the impression of being
over-populated.
