Originally Steenkool was a port of supply for the Netherlands New Guinea Petroleum Company. At a later
date an administrative post was built which was completed in 1956. The Petroleum Company settlement has
diminished in size during the last few years, the center of company activities having been transferred to
Tembuni, halfway between the production areas of Wasian and Mogoi.
A seven and one-half mile pipeline runs on a trestle from the Mogoi and the Wasian oil fields to the
terminal at Muturi. The draisine, a small hand-propelled flat car on rails running parallel to the
pipeline, is used for the purpose of inspecting the pipeline and of carrying passengers.
