Currency in Netherlands New Guinea
Source: Handbook on Netherlands New Guinea, 1958.
Monetary System.Under the current statutory regulations the unit of currency of Netherlands New Guinea is the New Guinea guilder (gulden). The New Guinea guilder is coupled to the Netherlands guilder on parity basis and so at the same time tied to the West European
Payments Union System. The Netherlands New Guinea guilder is divided into one hundred cents. The government issues currency notes in denominations of f 500,-, f 100,-, f 25,-, f 10,-, f 5,-, f 2,50 and f 1,-. In addition nickel coins of 25 and 10 cents and bronze coins of 5 cents and 1 cent are in
circulation. Netherlands New Guinea issues no coins of its own but makes use of Netherlands coins. The currency notes issued by the New Guinea Government are legal tender up to any amount, the metallic coins up to limited amounts. The territory has no bank of issue and for that reason no bank notes of its own are circulating. As far as check-book money is concerned it must be pointed out that a banking system has hardly developed yet, and that therefore the system of effecting payments by checks plays a very limited role.
The 1980 "Standard Catalog of World Paper Money" (by Albert Pick) shows the following description, after Indonesia, for "Irian Jaya", with the number 1 through 3, but without illustrations. The description of these three currency notes has not been found anywhere else yet, and do not appear in later editions.
